Happy Tranniversary

Friends and family gather around Jake Nash, the executive director of TransFamily, watching a video celebrating his 10-year “tranniversary" on November 15.

Nash was approved for his hormone treatments to begin his gender transition on November 17, 1998, and in honor of the tenth anniversary, he threw a party to benefit TransFamily that drew friends from as far away as Florida.

The party, held at the Lakewood home of Kathy Harvey, was filled with music, food from Dish Global Catering, a particularly ill-tempered Chihuahua and a roast of the guest of honor.

Most speakers had such a hard time thinking of anything about which to criticize Nash that the mirthful barbs were few and far between. Mostly it turned into a tribute to his neverending efforts on behalf of the transgender community.

It was jokingly suggested, however, that he convert to Judaism so that in three years he can celebrate his "Trans Mitzvah," when Jewish transsexuals officially change from boys

to men.

The tranniversary-Nash's term is followed by the Transgender Day of Remembrance, which was honored in Columbus with a candlelight vigil on November 19. The Cleveland event will be held on November 23, with a walking vigil in Lincoln Park in the Tremont neighborhood followed by a memorial and a celebration of life at Pilgrim Congregational Church on West 14th Street and Starkweather Ave.

On November 21, there will be a candlelight vigil at New Spirit MCC on Hamilton in Cincinnati for that city's observance of the Transgender Day of Remembrance, which memorializes victims of anti-trans violence.
